Finding Strength in the Small Moments: How a Simple Gesture from My Daughter Rekindled My Artistic Spirit

Updated: Jul 30

Thank you

I am dead. On the inside. No matter how I tried I ended up failing.

Earlier this week, I found myself clinging to the small scraps of work that came my way. I threw myself into these tasks wholeheartedly, hoping to find some semblance of validation and self-worth. Yet, despite my best efforts, my self-esteem remained stubbornly low. Job applications went unanswered, leaving me feeling more disheartened with each rejection. At 40 years old, I couldn't shake the nagging thought: who would want to hire a washed-out artist like me when there are so many young, talented artists out there?

It’s during these times of self-doubt that a source of pure, unfiltered inspiration helped lift me from my lowest points. My 4-year-old daughter, after returning from a playtime walk, brought me a handful of flowers she had picked from a small garden in our village. As she handed them to me, she said with a sweet innocence, "Daddy, I miss you." Her words and the simple gesture melted my heart, reminding me of why I fight every day, why I endure the battles, and why I strive for a brighter future for our family.

That moment became a turning point. It reinforced my resolve to keep pushing forward, not just for myself but for my daughter and our family's future. It reminded me of the importance of holding on to the things that truly matter and finding strength in love and purpose.

I have been regaining my confidence in creating a better version of an artist myself, practicing tirelessly and crafting portfolios to master and update my skills, from a simple gesture that made a profound impact on my well being it is important to fight and show love to the most important thing in your life.

Inspirational Tips for Overcoming Self-Doubt and Rekindling Passion:

  1. Embrace the Small Victories: Celebrate the small accomplishments and the work you complete, no matter how insignificant it may seem. Each small victory is a step towards your larger goals.

  2. Seek Inspiration in Unexpected Places: Sometimes, inspiration comes from the most unexpected sources. For me, it was a handful of flowers from my daughter. Stay open to these moments; they can provide the motivation you need to keep going.

  3. Focus on What Truly Matters: When self-doubt creeps in, remind yourself of your core motivations. For me, it’s my family and ensuring a happy, secure future for my daughter. Find your "why" and let it drive you forward.

  4. Invest in Self-Improvement: Use periods of low work volume to improve your skills. Practice tirelessly, craft new portfolios, and stay updated with industry trends. Self-improvement can boost your confidence and make you more marketable.

  5. Connect with Your Support System: Surround yourself with people who uplift and support you. Whether it’s family, friends, or fellow artists, having a support system can provide encouragement and perspective.

  6. Stay Persistent in Job Applications: Rejection is tough, but persistence is key. Keep applying for jobs and refining your applications. Every rejection brings you closer to the right opportunity.

  7. Practice Self-Compassion: Be kind to yourself. Understand that everyone faces setbacks and moments of doubt. Treat yourself with the same compassion you would offer a friend in a similar situation.

  8. Find Joy in Your Craft: Remember why you became an artist in the first place. Reconnect with the joy of creating art, free from the pressures of deadlines and comparisons.

  9. Visualize Your Success: Picture where you want to be and the steps needed to get there. Visualization can be a powerful tool in maintaining focus and motivation.

Through these practices, I’ve begun to regain my confidence and refine my skills as an artist. The simple gesture from my daughter had a profound impact on my well-being, reminding me of the importance of fighting for what matters most and showing love to the ones who inspire us.

Navigating the ups and downs of an artistic career can be challenging, especially when faced with self-doubt and external rejections. However, finding strength in small moments of joy and inspiration, like the gesture from my daughter, can reignite our passion and determination. By focusing on what truly matters, investing in self-improvement, and staying persistent, we can overcome obstacles and become the best version of ourselves.

It’s not just about the end goal but the journey and the love we share along the way that truly makes a difference. Keep fighting, keep creating, and let your passion shine through in everything you do.
